About Illuminators

Twenty-five years ago a simple checklist proved that hospital harm was preventable. My mission is to prove the harder thing: that when every person in healthcare is treated as worthy and capable, and held accountable for one another, harm falls, costs fall, and people flourish. And to help every hospital do it.

Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM, is Chief Quality and Clinical Transformation Officer at University Hospitals in Cleveland and the Veale Distinguished Chair in Leadership and Clinical Transformation. His patient safety checklist cut central-line infections by roughly 80 percent, spread across the state of Michigan, and placed him on the TIME 100. He is a MacArthur Fellow, a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and the author of more than a thousand peer-reviewed papers. At University Hospitals he and his colleagues developed Living and Leading with Love, a way of managing that has helped move the system from more than $200 million in annual losses to solvency while reducing Medicare patient care costs by 30 percent. His book, Love and Healthcare, is forthcoming.

Believe, belong, build

What we mean by love

Love is the disciplined commitment to treat every person as worthy and capable, and to build the systems to match. It is inseparable from accountability. It demands more of people, not less.

Twenty-five years ago a simple checklist showed that infections most hospitals accepted as inevitable could be driven toward zero. The checklist was easy. What changed the outcome was belief: that harm was preventable, and that every person on the team had standing to speak. That belief is the mechanism. We call it love, and we can measure it.

Believe.

Move from "impossible" to "we haven't figured it out yet." Trust that better is possible and that the people beside you can do it.

Belong.

The best ideas come from the people closest to the work, once they can speak across silos and know they will be heard.

Build.

Clear goals, clear roles, transparent data and shared accountability. Structure makes love habitual rather than heroic.

The people proving it

Illuminators are the leaders, clinicians and patients who show up each week to share what happens when an organization leads with love. Their stories are their own.
